Type specimens:
- Hylonomus lyelli: BMNH R4168, a partial skeleton (almost complete, but badly disarticulated). Its type locality is Coal Mine Point; Divison 4, Section XV, coal-group 15, which is in a Westphalian A mire/swamp sandstone/coal in the Joggins Formation of Canada.
- Hylerpeton curtidentatum: RM 2.1126, a partial skeleton (disarticulated elements of skull and few postcrania). Its type locality is Coal Mine Point; Divison 4, Section XV, coal-group 15, which is in a Westphalian A mire/swamp sandstone/coal in the Joggins Formation of Canada.
