Pomadasys was named by Lacépède (1802) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant. Its type is Sciaena argentea.

It was assigned to Pomadasyidae by Casier (1966), Schwarzhans (1978), Steurbaut (1979), Nolf and Steurbaut (1983) and Steurbaut (1984); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Haemulidae by Schwarzhans (2013), Schwarzhans et al. (2017), Schwarzhans (2019) and Agiadi et al. (2020).
