Seriola was named by Cuvier (1817) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 746,771]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Seriolidae by Jordan (1925); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Carangidae by Arambourg (1927), David (1943), Purdy et al. (2001), Fierstine et al. (2012), Carnevale et al. (2014) and Bannikov (2014).
