Taxonomy
Phacochoerus was named by Cuvier (1826) [also said to be 1817]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Suina by Gray (1825); to Artiodactyla by Owen (1848); to Suidae by Thomas (1904), White and Harris (1977) and Carroll (1988); to Phacochoerini by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Suinae by Funk et al. (2007).
