Lama was named by Cuvier (1800). It is extant.

It was assigned to Camelinae by Simpson (1945); to Camelidae by Carroll (1988) and Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008); and to Lamini by Webb (1965), Stanley et al. (1994), Webb and Meachen (2004) and Lynch et al. (2020).
