Arkarua was named by Gehling (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: V u Sepkoski's reference number: 759]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Arkarua adami.

It was assigned to Medusae by Sepkoski (2002); to Echinodermata by Fedonkin et al. (2007); and to Pentaradialomorpha by Laflamme et al. (2013).
