Taxonomy
Otaria weddellii was named by Lesson (1826). It is extant.

It was recombined as Leptonyx weddellii by Gray (1836), Gray (1837), Gray (1844), Gray (1850), Gill (1866) and Gray (1866); it was recombined as Leptonychotes weddelli by Gill (1872), Trouessart (1904), Turner (1912), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Stirling (1971), Riedman (1990), Koretsky (2001) and Cullen et al. (2014); it was recombined as Ogmorhinus (Leptonychotes) weddelli by Friant (1947); it was recombined as Leptonychotes weddellii by Deméré et al. (2003), Berta et al. (2018) and Kienle and Berta (2019).
