Mus coypus was named by Molina (1782). It is extant. It is the type species of Myocastor.
It was recombined as Myopotamus coypus by Waterhouse (1848); it was misspelled as Myopotamus coypu by Giebel (1883); it was recombined as Myocastor coypus by Allen (1895), Woods et al. (1992), Elissamburu and Vizcaíno (2004).
