Taxonomy

Arthropleura was named by Jordan (1854). Its type is Arthropleura armata.

It was reranked as Eurypterus (Arthropleura) by Salter (1863).

It was assigned to Eurypterus by Salter (1863); and to Arthropleuridae by Pruvost (1919), Pruvost (1930), Guthörl (1934), Štamberg and Zajíc (2008), Pillola and Zoboli (2021).

Species

A. armata (syn. Halonia irregularis, A. zeilleri, A. affinis) (type species), A. britannica, A. cristata, A. enodis, A. fayoli, A. maillieuxi, A. mammata, A. moyseyi, A. punctata, Carcinochelus anthracophilus

Synonyms

Halonia was named by Geinitz (1855). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Arthropleura by Pruvost (1919).
Carcinochelus was named by Goldenberg (1877).

It was synonymized subjectively with Arthropleura by Waterlot (1934).
Carcinochelus anthracophilus was named by Goldenberg (1877). Its type specimen is BMNH I. 3090 and is an impression. Its type locality is Saarlouis Lebach ironstone nodules, which is in an Asselian/Sakmarian lacustrine shale in Germany.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Waterlot (1934).
