Taxonomy
Cornwallius was named by Hay (1923) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u]. Its type is Paleoparadoxia tabatai. It was considered monophyletic by Beatty (2009).
It was assigned to Cornwalliidae by Shikama (1966); to Desmostylia by Domning et al. (1986), Domning (1996), Sepkoski (2002) and Domning (2008); to Desmostylia by Berta (2017); and to Desmostylidae by Hay (1930), VanderHoof (1937), Kretzoi (1941), VanderHoof (1942), Reinhart (1959), Carroll (1988), Inuzuka et al. (1995), McKenna and Bell (1997), Inuzuka (2000), Beatty (2009), Domning (2018), Matsui and Tsuihiji (2019) and Beatty (2023).
