Taxonomy
Sphenacodon was named by Marsh (1878). It is not extant. Its type is Sphenacodon ferox. It is the type genus of Sphenacodontidae, Sphenacodontinae.
It was assigned to Clepsydropidae by Hay (1902); to Naosaurinae by Case (1907); to Sphenacodontinae by Reisz (1986); and to Sphenacodontidae by Hay (1930) and Carroll (1988).
