Phascolosorex was named by Marschie (1916). It is extant. Its type is Phascogale dorsalis.

It was assigned to Phascolosorexinae by Archer (1982); to Phascolosoricinae by Krajewski et al. (1992); and to Dasyuridae by McKenna and Bell (1997).
