Taxonomy

Myocastor was named by Kerr (1782). It is extant. Its type is Mus coypus.

It was assigned to Myocastoridae by Rovereto (1914); to Myocastorinae by Ameghino (1904), Patterson and Pascual (1968); to Octodontoidea by Arnal and Vucetich (2015); and to Echimyidae by Carvalho and Salles (2004), Upham and Patterson (2015).

It was synonymized subjectively with Myocastor by Allen (1895).

It was assigned to Muriformia by Ameghino (1885).
Mastonotus was named by Wesmael (1841). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Myocastor by Woods et al. (1992).
Tramyocastor was named by Rusconi (1936). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Myocastor by Patterson and Pascual (1968).

It was assigned to Capromyidae by McKenna and Bell (1997).
