Taxonomy
Ethmophyllum was named by Meek (1868) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-u Cm Boto-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1243]. Its type is Ethmophyllum whitneyi. It is the type genus of Ethmophyllidae.

It was assigned to Archaeocyathidae by Raymond (1931); to Ajacicyathida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ethmophyllidae by Debrenne et al. (2015).
