Taxonomy

Desmatippus was named by Scott (1893). Its type is Desmatippus crenidens.

It was synonymized subjectively with Anchitherium by Cope (1894) and Matthew (1899); it was synonymized subjectively with Parahippus by Gidley (1904), Gidley (1907), Osborn (1918), Hay (1930) and Stirton (1940); it was corrected as Desmathippus by Scott (1913).

It was assigned to Hyracotheriinae by Hay (1902); to Equidae by Scott (1893), Scott (1913), Tedford et al. (1987) and Fremd (1994); and to Anchitheriinae by MacFadden (1998).

Synonyms

Anchippus was named by Leidy (1868).

It was synonymized subjectively with Parahippus by Gidley (1904), Peterson (1906), Gidley (1907), Osborn (1918), Stirton (1940), Macdonald (1963), Macdonald (1970) and Forsten (1975); it was synonymized subjectively with Desmatippus by MacFadden (1998); it was considered a nomen dubium by Macdonald (1992).

It was assigned to Anchitheridae by Leidy (1869); to Palaeotheriinae by Cope (1881); to Hyracotheriinae by Hay (1902); and to Equidae by Leidy (1868), Albright (1991), Albright (1999) and Albright et al. (2019).
