Embolotherium was named by Osborn (1929). It is the type genus of Embolotheriinae.
It was assigned to Brontotheridae by Carroll (1988), Prothero and Schoch (1989); to Embolotheriinae by Osborn (1929), Granger and Gregory (1943), Mihlbachler et al. (2004); and to Embolotheriita by Mihlbachler (2008).
