Taxonomy
Choerolophodon was named by Schlesinger (1917). It is the type genus of Choerolophodontinae.
It was assigned to Elephantiformes by Shoshani and Tassy (1996); to Proboscidea by Theodorou et al. (2003); to Gomphotheriidae by Carroll (1988) and Geraads et al. (2005); to Choerolophodontinae by McKenna and Bell (1997), Shoshani and Tassy (2005), Tsoukala et al. (2007) and Sanders et al. (2010); and to Choerolophodontidae by Mothé et al. (2016).
