Taxonomy
Colpodon was named by Burmeister (1885). Its type is Colpodon propinquus.
It was assigned to Nesodontidae by Ameghino (1887); to Astrapotheroidea by Lydekker (1894); to Homalodontotheridae by Ameghino (1894); to Notohippidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Leontiniidae by Carroll (1988), Ribeiro et al. (2010), Shockey et al. (2012).
