Zeuglodon caucasicus was named by Lydekker (1892) [Kellogg (1923) states that the type specimen was loaned to Lydekker by H. Sjogren of Upsala, Sweeden.]. Its type specimen is Georgia Museum, M. G. Collection 116-29, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Microzeuglodon caucasicus by Stromer (1903); it was recombined as Basilosaurus caucasicus by Trouessart (1904); it was recombined as Basilosaurus caucasicum by Kalmykov (2012); it was misspelled as Zeuglodon caucasicum by Aslanova (1963); it was considered a nomen dubium by Uhen and Pyenson (2007); it was recombined as Microzeuglodon caucasicum by Abel (1914), Kellogg (1923), Mchedlidze (1970) and Mori et al. (2017).
