Taxonomy
Bottosaurus was named by Agassiz (1849). Its type is Crocodilus harlani.
It was assigned to Alligatoridae by Swinton (1938); to Crocodylidae by Hay (1902), Hay (1930) and Erickson (1998); to Caimaninae by Cossette and Brochu (2018), Godoy et al. (2020), Cidade et al. (2020) and Cossette (2021); and to Jacarea by Rio and Mannion (2021).
