USGS 779, 7794 - Lanes Ferry [Castle Hayne Limestone] (Eocene of the United States)

Also known as Rocky Point

Where: Pender County, North Carolina (34.4° N, 77.9° W: paleocoordinates 34.3° N, 68.7° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Castle Hayne Formation, Bartonian (41.3 - 38.0 Ma)

• LITHOSTRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONSHIPS: Castle Hayne Limestone. AGE: Eocene, according to Miller (1947); Bartonian, according to Kier (1980). STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From unknown position in section.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: deep subtidal ramp; poorly lithified, pebbly, phosphatic, shelly/skeletal wackestone and grainstone

• ENVIRONMENT: The Castle Hayne Limestone was deposited in an open, normal salinity environment between 30 m and 100 m in water depth. Comfort Member contains cross-bedded intervals, suggesting some energy, consistent with deep subtidal environment.
• LITHOLOGY: Kier: three facies in ascending stratigraphic order: phosphate pebble biomicrudite, bryozoan biosparrudite, bryozoan biomicrudite; Kellum: soft white limestone or marl with many fossils. LITHIFICATION: Poorly lithified, on the basis of facies description.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: cast, mold/impression

Reposited in the USNM

• COLLECTORS: Unknown, multiple. REPOSITORY: USNM.
