Environment/lithology: marine; poorly lithified, concretionary, black, carbonaceous shale

• Shales when fresh are black in color and strongly bituminous but weather like the Heath and Chira shales to a dark chocolate color or a dull gray. In some sections there are bands of fullers earth and zones of small, yellow concretions.
