Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; limestone

• the Cambrian sequence begins with the Nelson Limestone, a unit 600 to 700 feet thick, which lies with angular miconf ormity 011 the Patuxent Formation. Overlying the Nelson Limestone conformably is the Gambacorta Formation, a unit of volcanic and hypabyssal rocks more than 1,000 feet thick.
