Kounov, Rakovnik District (Carboniferous of Czech Republic)

Also known as Kounova

Where: Rakovník, Czech Republic (50.2° N, 13.7° E: paleocoordinates 2.8° N, 20.9° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Kounov Member (Slaný Formation), Stephanian B (301.5 - 301.0 Ma)

• Overlying tuff constrained to an age younger than 301.5 +/- 0.11 Ma by Opluštil et al. (2016).

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; lithified siliciclastic sediments

• Central-West Bohemian basin; extensional basin developed within Variscan zone along simple asymmetric mega-graben formed on the Central Bohemian and Litomerice fault zones, with some contribution from transtensional wrench faults.

•The sediments at Kounova suggest deposition in the bottom of a quiet pool, and the environment seems to have been that of a coal-swamp region. (Kissel, 2010)

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: mold/impression

Collection methods: Repository: National Museum, Prague (CGH)
