Pond Eddy (Devonian of the United States)

Where: Sullivan County, New York (41.4° N, 74.8° W: paleocoordinates 35.7° S, 23.5° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Delaware River flags Formation (Sonyea Group), Frasnian (382.7 - 372.2 Ma)

• Serlin: This formation at Pond Eddy is a non-marine correlative of the lowermost Walton Formation and much of the underlying Oneonta Formation.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial; siltstone and sandstone

• Serlin: Paleocurrents indicate that the souce of the sediment lay to the southeast of Milford, PA, some 17.6 km away from Pond Eddy. The Delaware River Formation appears to have been deposited by a fluvial system close to the shore-line along a low plain. The water table in the area of deposition was apparently "sufficiently high to prevent oxidation of the muds". This reducing conditon created a suitable environment for preservation of an abundance of plant remains.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: adpression, replaced with pyrite

Collection methods: chemical, mechanical,
