Hamar Laghdad, "Red Cliff" Latest Emsian to earliest brachipods (Devonian to of Morocco)

Where: Morocco (31.4° N, 4.1° W: paleocoordinates 49.8° S, 23.3° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Late/Upper Emsian to Late/Upper Emsian (402.5 - 387.7 Ma)

• Latest Emsian to earliest Eifelian

Environment/lithology: lagoonal or restricted shallow subtidal; lithified limestone and lithified marl

• calm and likely deeper but still photic environment, which was protected against destructive current and wave activity by surrounding mud mounds and the mud ridge to the west and south. In addition, the environment should not be too calm because of presence of rhynchonellids and retziids, which prefer a higher water energy. Furthermore, based on lithological information, the environment was suggested as a very shallow and and calm environment with local lagoonal bahamites and higher salinity between small coral biohermes. In summary, the environment represent a good model of equilibrium half-way between the current and wave agitated reefs and the muddy substrate of deeper basinal environment.
• red marlstones and calcareous mudstones

Size class: macrofossils
