Also known as Cujan sand-pit

Where: Czech Republic (48.8° N, 16.6° E: paleocoordinates 48.5° N, 16.4° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Tortonian (11.6 - 7.2 Ma)

• Upper Badenian. "Juttner (in Kalasek et al., 1963) found on this or other close locality the remains of mastodon Gomphotherium angustidens and rangesd the beds to the Sarmatian. Kalasek et al. ranged the beds to the Tortonian (Badenian). It is the right age determination."

Environment/lithology: marine; poorly lithified, gray, green sandstone and poorly lithified, calcareous claystone

• ...grey to greenish, partly variegated and variably sandy, mostly soft, only in bottom layers of semi-compact unstratified, disintegrating calcareous clays. Less frequent are clays, often sandy, and grey, mostly fine-grained micaceous quartzous sands. Thickness of the Upper Badenian in the basin is 700-1000m, 100-200m in peripheries.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
