Shaqra Group (Arab Fm.) (Jurassic of Saudi Arabia)

Where: Saudi Arabia (25.0° N, 46.5° E: paleocoordinates 1.9° S, 34.4° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: A Member (Arab Formation), Kimmeridgian (157.3 - 152.1 Ma)

Environment/lithology: lagoonal or restricted shallow subtidal; lithified limestone

• The Arab Fm. (and Hith Anhydrite) show a rapid succession of four carbonate-evaporite sequences. Each sequence top is marked by environmental confinement and by the deposition of gypsum and anhydrite. Thes are of an early Kimmeridgian to Tithonian (?) age. The post mortem silting up and encrustation are typical of a protected environment in a very proximal infiltration zone of the shelf. The paleogeography was a very flat-lying and the water very shallow.

Size classes: macrofossils, microfossils

Collection methods: bulk, mechanical,
