MGS #91a (Oligocene of the United States)

Where: Smith County, Mississippi (32.0° N, 89.5° W: paleocoordinates 32.3° N, 83.0° W)

• coordinate based on political unit

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Marianna Limestone Formation, Rupelian (33.9 - 28.1 Ma)

• The Mint Spring Formation - Marianna transgressive sequence began with the subsidence of Forest Hill delta systems. As the northern Gulf waters transgressed inland over the delta plain and estuarine envoronments, the Mint Spring Formation was deposited as a destructional shelf sand in the near-shore environments. Carbonates of the Marianna Limestone were deposited above this sand in the deeper waters of an off shore carbonate shelf.

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; lithified, conglomeratic, calcareous conglomerate and carbonate

Size class: mesofossils

Preservation: original aragonite, original calcite

Collection methods: bulk, mechanical,

• bivalves only.

Taxonomic list

• the list uses catagories R = rare,1-9 valves collected. C = common, 10-99 valves collected. A = abundant, 100+ valves collected.

•Categories are listed in the comments field, absolute abundances are given in the abundance field.

•Since taxa with greater than 99 specimens were not counted with absolute abundances, these were reported with category "A" for abundant.
