Where: Esmeraldas, Ecuador (1.1° N, 79.0° W: paleocoordinates 0.3° N, 76.2° W)

When: Borbon Formation (Santiago Group), Middle Miocene (16.0 - 11.6 Ma)

• Possibly equivalent to the upper Esmeraldas (Punta Gorda facies) and the Tumbez of Peru.

Environment/lithology: marginal marine; lithified, coarse-grained conglomerate

• The molluscan fossils would seem to indicate a lagoonal to fully marine environment of deposition, the fossiliferous beds of irregular or patchy occurrence.
• The base of the formation is a coarse conglomerate exposed at Selva Alegre.
