Cross (Loc. 20) - Raysor Marl (Campbell et al. 1975 coll.) (Pliocene of the United States)

Where: Berkeley County, South Carolina (33.3° N, 80.1° W: paleocoordinates 33.4° N, 79.5° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Raysor Formation, Late/Upper Pliocene (3.6 - 2.6 Ma)

• Local section name: Cross. Basinal/regional section name: Berkeley.

•From Raysor Marl (late middle Pliocene age, ~3.6 Ma). Raysor Marl is laterally equivalent to the lower Goose Creek Limestone, although older publications suggest it unconformably overlies that unit. The Raysor Marl, as described by Sloan (1907), Cooke (1936), and Weems et al. (1982) is a silty quartz sand. Lithostratigraphically and biostratigraphically equivalent beds are present at the former Raysor Bridge locality, South Carolina. Ecological analysis indicates that the assemblage is Raysor (K-5).

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; poorly lithified, shelly/skeletal, silty sandstone

• No environmental data reported.
• Silty quartz sand.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: midden

Reposited in the USNM

Collection methods: quarrying,

• Campbell et al. (1975) collection. Material reposited in Converse College, Charleston Museum, USNM and USCS.
