S2/f532 - Battery Mbr, Little Slaty Creek (Ordovician of New Zealand)

Also known as GS 7491

Where: New Zealand (40.7° S, 172.4° E: paleocoordinates 13.1° N, 167.7° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Battery Member (Aorangi Mine Formation), Yapeenian (470.3 - 467.3 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: Derived from Battery Member of Aorangi Mine Fm, which overlies the Anthill Black Shale Mbr (Lancefieldian-Castlemanian). THICKNESS: 150 m in type section. AGE: Battery Mbr is upper Castlemainian and lower Yapeenian, but collection is derived from the zone of I. v. maximodivergens, corresponding to the lower part of the member and is lower Yapeenian. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: Presumably uppermost part of Battery Mbr.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: deep-water; poorly lithified, gray, blue, sandy siltstone

• ENVIRONMENT: No environmental data reported. Presumably shallower (coarser, more oxygenated facies) than underlying Anthill Black Shale Mbr, and silicicastic, hence assigned to a "deep-water indet." environment.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Medium to dark, soft, blue-grey massive siltstone with interbedded bands of hard gery quartz sandstone and black slate. LITHIFICATION: Poorly lithified, as text states lithology to be soft, and contrasts this with interbeds that are "hard" and "slate".

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: original carbon

Reposited in the IGNS

Collection methods: bulk,

• COLLECTOR: S.K. Swarko (1959). REPOSITORY: New Zealand Geological Survey (now GNS Science), Lower Hutt, New Zealand
