Where: Argentina (43.0° S, 64.3° W: paleocoordinates 43.1° S, 61.9° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Puerto Madryn Formation, Late/Upper Miocene (11.6 - 5.3 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Puerto Madryn Fm, which unconformably overlies the Gaiman Fm (Early Miocene). THICKNESS: From 8 m thick bed within 53 m thick section. Formation reaches a maximum thickness of 150 m. AGE: Middle Miocene according to del Rio (1992) on the basis of generic affinities with Middle Miocene Caribbean faunas. Regarded as Late Miocene by del Rio (2004). STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From near top of section.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; lithified, shelly/skeletal, yellow, calcareous sandstone and lithified, fine-grained, gray sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Shallow marine tidal and subtidal environment with frequent storm processes superimposed.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Yellow and hard very fine calcareous sandstone with interbedded grey fine-grained sandstones yielding a varied and poorly preserved invertebrate fauna. LITHIFICATION: Lithified based on facies description.
