Mesch [Vijlen Chalk, Gulpen Fm] (Cretaceous of Netherlands)

Where: Netherlands (50.8° N, 5.7° E: paleocoordinates 43.3° N, 4.6° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Vijlen Member (Maastricht Formation), Early/Lower Maastrichtian (70.6 - 66.0 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Vijlen Chalk of the Maastricht Fm, and overlies the Beutenaken Chalk of the Gulpen Fm. Where the Beutenaken Chalk is missing, the Vijlen Chalk rests unconformably on the Zeven Wegen Chalk. AGE: late Early Maastrichtian, on the basis of ammonite and belemnite biostratigraphy; Belemnella cimbrica zone. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From unknown position within formation.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lithified, phosphatic lime mudstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Shallow marine carbonate setting.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: No specific lithological data reported in text. Probably chalk. LITHIFICATION: Lithified on the basis of figured specimens.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: cast, mold/impression, replaced with phosphate
