Toverwater (Permian to of South Africa)

Also known as Towerwater

Where: Western Cape, South Africa (32.1° S, 23.9° E: paleocoordinates 62.5° S, 28.8° W)

• coordinate based on political unit

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Daptocephalus Assemblage Zone other zone, Balfour Formation (Beaufort Group), Wuchiapingian to Wuchiapingian (259.9 - 252.2 Ma)

• Originally identified as "Cistecephalus zone". Kitching (1977) listed this occurrence as within the Daptocephalus zone, which is equivalent to the Dicynodon Assemblage Zone. Geographic and stratigraphic data suggest that the locality is in the Balfour Formation of the Beaufort Group (see Catuneanu et al., 2005, J. Afr. Earth Sci., 43, figs. 24, 25). The Dicynodon AZ is constrained as late Wuchiapingian to Changhsingian on the basis of radioisotopic data (Rubidge et al. 2013, Geology)

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: "floodplain"; sandstone and red claystone

• "The succession was deposited mainly by overbank flooding of large meandering rivers of variable sinuosity, draining an extensive alluvial plain [...] "
• "fining-upward succession of sandstones and purple mudstones containing numerous thin chert bands and rich tetrapod faunas (Abrahamskraal and Teekloof formations of the Adelaide Subgroup)." (Catuneanu et al., 2005)
