C 14091 (Paleocene of Colombia)

Where: Guajira, Colombia (11.5° N, 72.9° W: paleocoordinates 9.0° N, 58.3° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Manantial Formation, Danian (66.0 - 61.6 Ma)

• Local unit II Manantial fm. Authors tentatively suggest this is Danian age.

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: prodelta; lithified, shelly/skeletal, muddy, silty sandstone

• "...between the lower tide level and 30 meters of depth. ...Summing up the history of this thin layer and its fauna, it can be interpreted as an accumulation of sediments in an inlet or channel on a marine region, where there was an abrupt increase of depth over a very short period. ... a region indirectly affected by a delta [where many different substrate environments develop in close proximity], like the case of the ‘east Mississippi Delta’, Gulf of Mexico, or the Orinoco Delta.
• Predominately packed biomicrite, although the microfacies vary from site to site, rocks appear as a very fine grained quartz sandstone with echinoderm plates and spines, shells, ostracods bryozoans and ooliths.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Preservation: cast, mold/impression

Collected by W. Durham and F. Etayo-Serna in 1944-45 and 1976; reposited in the UCMP
