Sister taxa: Cotylorhynchus bransoni, Cotylorhynchus romeri

Type specimen: CNHM (FMNH) UR 154, a set of limb elements (right humerus and proximal end of right radius). Its type locality is Locality HA ("Lower San Angelo Fm."), which is in a Kungurian/Roadian fluvial claystone/conglomerate in the San Angelo Formation of Texas.
