Type specimens:

  • Phlegethontia longissima: ČGH 129, a partial skeleton (skull with anterior vertebrae and ribs). Its type locality is Nyrany, which is in a Westphalian D lacustrine coal in the Kladno Formation of the Czech Republic.
  • Aornerpeton mazonensis: USNM 17097, a skeleton. Its type locality is Mazon Creek, which is in a Westphalian D deltaic mudstone/siderite in the Carbondale Formation of Illinois.
  • Phlegethontia serpens: AMNH 6899, a partial skeleton (partial precaudal vertebral column with ribs). Its type locality is Linton, which is in a Westphalian D mire/swamp coal in Ohio.
