Sister taxa: Tapopterum celsum, Tapopterum extendum, Tapopterum impurum, Tapopterum longum, Tapopterum oborianum, Tapopterum subtile

Type specimen: UNM 6851, a forewing (almost complete forewing). Its type locality is NMMNH L-3433; Carrizo Arroyo (UNM collection), which is in an Asselian pond mudstone in the Bursum Formation of New Mexico.
