Sister taxa: Rhombomylus laianensis, Rhombomylus turpanensis
Type specimen: IVPP V5354, a partial skull. Its type locality is Changpiliang, IVPP Loc. 76003, which is in an Eocene terrestrial horizon in the Lingcha Formation of China.
