Type specimens:

  • Polycotylus latipinnis: USNM 27678/AMNH 1735, a set of postcrania (vertebrae, ilium, and metapodials (USNM) plus phalanges (AMNH)). Its type locality is 8 km east of Fort Wallace, which is in a Santonian marine limestone in the Niobrara Formation of Kansas.
  • Polycotylus dolichopus: YPM 1642 [paratype], 1646 [holotype], a set of limb elements (a femur and most of the paddle (YPM 1642); a humerus and some mesopodial/epipodial bones (YPM 1646)). Its type locality is Logan County Dolichorhynchops dolichopus locality (PROXY), which is in a Coniacian/Santonian marine horizon in the Niobrara Formation of Kansas.

• Cretaceous of United States (7: Alabama, Kansas, South Dakota collections)
