Sister taxon: Marzanoptera tersillae

Type specimen: UCMP 219078, a partial skull (partial skull lacking the premaxillae, maxillae, nasals, jugals, tympanic bullae, and bodies of the petrosal). Its type locality is UCMP V99849, San Gregorio section, Half Moon Bay, which is in a Piacenzian coastal sandstone/siltstone in the Purisima Formation of California.
