Sister taxa: Aetiocetus polydentatus, Aetiocetus weltoni

Type specimen: USNM 25210, a partial skeleton (skull and partial skeleton). Its type locality is Deer Creek, which is in a Chattian marine sandstone/siltstone in the Yaquina Formation of Oregon.
