Taxonomy
Yaguarasaurus was named by Páramo (1994). Its type is Yaguarasaurus columbianus.
It was assigned to Plioplatecarpini by Páramo (1994) and Páramo-Fonseca (2000); to Russellosaurina by Bell and Polcyn (2005) and Polcyn and Bell (2005); to Tethysaurinae by Makádi et al. (2012); to Yaguarasaurinae by Palci et al. (2013) and Driscoll et al. (2019); and to Plioplatecarpinae by Rivera-Sylva et al. (2024).
