Holotype designated by Dilkes (1990) who thought the specimen should be assigned to Dissorophoidea incertae sedis

Taxonomy
Nanobamus macrorhinus was named by Schoch and Milner (2014). Its type specimen is UCLA-VP 3686, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Archer City Bonebed 1 (Putnam Fm.), which is in a Wolfcamp terrestrial horizon in the Archer City Formation of Texas. It is the type species of Nanobamus.
