Blattodea was named by Brunner von Wattenwyl (1882). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Blattida by Vrsansky (2010).

It was assigned to Blattopteroidea by Müller (1965) and Sharov (1968); to Blattopteroida by Geyer and Kleber (1987); to Blattoneoptera by Kukalová-Peck and Lawrence (2004); to Neoptera by Martynov (1937) and Jarzembowski and Schneider (2007); and to Dictyoptera by Béthoux et al. (2011), Eades (2012), Misof et al. (2014) and Nel et al. (2014).
