Claosaurus was named by Marsh (1890). Its type is Hadrosaurus agilis. It is the type genus of Claosauridae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pteropelyx by Cope (1892); it was synonymized subjectively with Thespesius by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Trachodon by Huene (1927).
