Taxonomy
Plesiadapiformes was named by Simons and Tattersall (1972). It was considered monophyletic by Beard (1993).

It was replaced with Paromomyiformes by Szalay (1973); it was reranked as the infraorder Plesiadapiformes by Gingerich (1975) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (1979).

It was assigned to Plesitarsiiformes by Gingerich (1975); to Prosimii by Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (1979); to Dermoptera by Beard (1993); and to Primates by McKenna (1975), Carroll (1988), Gunnell (1989), Fox (1990), Fox (1991), Tabuce et al. (2004), Fox et al. (2010) and Fox (2011).
