Taxonomy
Parapithecus was named by Schlosser (1911). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Parapithecidae, Parapithecinae. It was considered monophyletic by Beard et al. (2016).

It was synonymized subjectively with Apidium by Gingerich (1978).

It was assigned to Parapithecidae by Simons and Kay (1983), McKenna and Bell (1997), Simons (2001) and Seiffert et al. (2005); and to Parapithecinae by Beard et al. (2016).
