Carcinodon was named by Scott (1892). Its type is Mioclaenus filholianus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Oxyclaenus by Van Valen (1978).

It was assigned to Arctocyonidae by Scott (1892), Johnston and Fox (1984), Archibald (1998) and Tabuce et al. (2011).
